Chennai, 15th May 2025 — Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, a leading multi-specialty healthcare provider in Chennai, has launched Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy, a major development in the field of cancer care. With this launch, Kauvery becomes one of the few hospitals in India offering this advanced form of immunotherapy for select blood cancers.
CAR-T therapy is a type of immunotherapy that uses a patient’s own immune cells, called T cells, to fight cancer. Doctors take these T cells from the patient’s own blood and modify them in a lab so they can better recognize and attack cancer cells. After this modification, the reengineered T cells are subsequently infused into the patient’s body, where they locate and eliminate the cancer cells.
This treatment is mainly used for certain blood cancers like acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), especially when patients who have not responded to conventional therapies. CAR-T therapy offers a more targeted and personalized approach, helping patients whose cancer has returned or resisted standard therapies. Because the modified T cells can multiply and stay active in the body, they provide ongoing protection against cancer relapse.
“CAR-T therapy changes how we treat hematologic cancers,” said Dr. Arshad Raja, Consultant Hemato-Oncologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Physician at Kauvery Hospital. “It redefines our approach to blood cancer treatment with this advancement now available locally, we are empowering patients in India with world-class, precision-targeted care that was once out of reach.”
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India records over 1.4 million new cancer cases annually, with hematologic cancers comprising a significant portion. CAR-T therapy provides a vital option when standard chemotherapy or transplants fail. By making this therapy available in Chennai, Kauvery Hospital expands access to patients across South India who would otherwise need to seek care in metro cities or abroad.
“Bringing CAR-T therapy to our hospital reflects our ongoing focus on introducing new treatment options that meet global standards,” said Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Kauvery Group of Hospitals. “The launch of CAR-T therapy marks a bold step into the future of medicine. It reflects our passion for innovation, our pursuit of excellence, and our mission to change lives for the better.”
