CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S THE ODYSSEY STORMS THE GLOBAL BOX OFFICE; RECORDS HIS BIGGEST-EVER OPENING WEEKEND IN INDIA WITH ₹70 CRORE GROSS

Delivers Nolan’s biggest global opening with a staggering $264.1 million worldwide debut
Records the No. 1 IMAX opening day and biggest IMAX opening weekend of all time in India, and ranks No. 6 among all international markets globally
Mumbai, 21 July 2026: Indian audiences have turned Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey into a nationwide theatrical event. The epic action spectacle grossed approximately ₹70 crore ($7.3 million) over its opening weekend, recording the biggest debut ever for a Christopher Nolan film in India and one of the country’s biggest Hollywood opening weekends.
The film opened to approximately ₹20 crore gross on Friday, marking Nolan’s highest opening day in India. It also set the record for the biggest IMAX opening day in Indian cinema history before registering strong growth on Saturday and Sunday. Exceptional demand for IMAX and other premium-format screens prompted several cinemas to introduce midnight and early-morning shows, while moviegoers travelled across cities to experience the film on the biggest screens available.
The ₹70 crore weekend surpassed Oppenheimer’s opening in India and established a new benchmark for Nolan in the market. It also set the record for the biggest IMAX opening weekend of all time in India. The country ranked sixth among all international markets outside North America during the film’s opening weekend. With a $7.3 million debut, The Odyssey also recorded the biggest opening of 2026 in India for a non-Indian film, overtaking Evil Dead Burn.
Universal confirmed the global figure as Nolan’s biggest worldwide opening to date. India’s landmark performance contributed to the film’s spectacular $264.1 million debut, comprising $124.5 million from North America and $139.6 million from international markets. The result surpassed the worldwide openings of all Nolan’s previous releases.
Filmed entirely with IMAX®️ cameras, a first for a feature film ‘The Odyssey’ also rewrote premium-format records. IMAX contributed an extraordinary $52 million globally during the opening weekend, making it only the second film ever to cross $50 million in the format during its debut.
Commenting on the historic performance, Denzil Dias, Vice President and Managing Director, India Theatrical, Warner Bros. Discovery said, “The Odyssey delivered Christopher Nolan’s biggest ever opening weekend in India, with round-the-clock shows through the weekend and an all-time IMAX opening day and opening weekend records, for IMAX.”
“Some films make it easy to choose the cinema. The Odyssey made it impossible to choose anything else. This weekend, India agreed and showed up. In every language and format available to it.”
Written, directed and produced by Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey is a landmark cinematic achievement and the first feature film ever shot entirely with IMAX®️ cameras. Based on Homer’s timeless epic, the film chronicles Odysseus’ extraordinary journey home following the fall of Troy, bringing one of literature’s greatest adventures to the big screen with Nolan’s signature scale and storytelling.
The film features a stellar ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya and Charlize Theron.
The Odyssey is now playing in cinemas across India, including IMAX®️ screens!
