Chennai, October 3rd, 2026: We CAN, one of India’s earliest autism services organizations, celebrated 25 years of dedicated service in Chennai, marking a significant milestone in its journey of supporting individuals with autism and their families. Thiru K. Annamalai, former BJP Tamil Nadu State President, attended the celebrations as the Chief Guest.
Founded in 2001 by Dr. Gita Sankaran, We CAN began its journey at a time when evidence-based support and structured services for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) were virtually unavailable in Chennai. Over the past 25 years, the organization has grown into a trusted name in autism care, supporting individuals and families through a range of services rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a globally recognized approach to supporting individuals with autism and neurodiversity across the lifespan.
Today, We CAN’s services include diagnostic support, early intervention, parent counselling, parent training, individualized intervention, and life and independent-living skills programmes for young adults on the spectrum.
The 25th anniversary celebration brought together children and young adults who have been part of We CAN’s journey, their families, the organization’s dedicated team, and friends and well-wishers who have supported its work over the years. During the celebrations, K. Annamalai interacted with the children and young adults, spending time with them and engaging with their families and the We CAN team. The evening celebrated the organization’s achievements while also recognizing the collective efforts of families, professionals, caregivers, and supporters who have contributed to its journey.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Gita Sankaran, Founder, We CAN, said: “When We CAN began in 2001, there was a great need for evidence-based services and support for individuals with autism and their families. Twenty-five years later, our commitment remains to recognize the potential of every individual and create meaningful opportunities for learning, independence, and a fulfilling life.”
The celebrations also reflected on We CAN’s continued efforts to create greater awareness, provide family-centred support, and enable individuals with autism and neurodiversity to develop skills for greater independence and participation in society.
As We CAN enters its 26th year, the organization remains committed to its vision of providing structured, family-centred and lifelong support, while creating meaningful opportunities for individuals with autism and neurodiversity. The 25th anniversary celebration was curated and executed by Atulya Weddings and Events.
